Sailing Charts

2023 | Sculpture and Collage

Dry orchid branches, tying wire; 30 x 40 cm (various dimensions).

In response to studies of the traditional knowledge of island and coastal peoples, and especially from Polynesian communities, Cartas de Marear presents navigation charts between islands, increasingly less used among sailors after the recent advents of geolocation inserted in the Second World War. In this set, the fragile construction with the original shells and twigs is remembered with dry orchid branches and the tying wires that manipulate their growth. Cartas de Marear proposes to pay attention to almost lost traditions, at the same time as it wants to reflect on the human desire to manipulate nature for aesthetic pleasure.
